| The Latest from Handwaving | MORE | | I Use This use Windows 7 and do most development in Ubuntu within VMware player (using Unity). At usesthis.com they interview a bunch of people to ask about their current computer setup and their dream setup. Most of them are using aged machines, ultraportables (Mac Air is popular), and Emacs/VIM for editing (a few slickedit fans). Most of them have little to add in their dream setup (more battery life, better cloud sync). Are our tools finally good enough? Not for me. Current setup: A 4 year old Sony Z laptop, 8GB RAM, SSD. When I need it, I’ve got instances running in AWS. Technology DevelopMentor Courses - Friday, October 26, 2012 Microsoft Surface agree with Microsoft that it’s important for them to have a tablet with Windows, especially for the enterprise market. Surface Pro is an Intel-based tablet that runs the full Windows 8 OS. On the day the iPad was announced my first thought was to stick a thin keyboard on the case. Two years later Microsoft has implemented the idea exactly as I had imagined it on their new Surface tablet. So they’ve come out with two versions. Surface is an ARM-based tablet that competes directly with the iPad. This appears to compete with ultraportables. think the iPad still wins. DevelopMentor Courses - Tuesday, June 19, 2012 Ubuntu is too much work usually run Windows w/ Linux in a VM. Frankly, I am happy to pay the Windows (or Apple) tax because it means I’ll always get the right drivers and my computer will just work. I’m returning my laptop’s SSD for a replacement drive. In the meantime, I loaded Ubuntu Precise on my Sony Z. The installation actually went just fine. It looked good, it appeared to work and all was well. Unfortunately, my laptop has a switch to manually choose between Intel’s integrated graphics and an Nvidia GPU. for some reason. It finally works, though the 3D is underwhelming. DevelopMentor Courses - Thursday, May 17, 2012 | | The Best from Handwaving | MORE | | Apple stifles PL innovation If Java successfully supplanted the Windows API, then apps would be portable across OSes and MS would lose their franchise. Apple has changed their developer agreement to require that all apps be written in C, C++ or Objective-C. This bans all other programming languages and runtimes from the iPhone OS. The reason is obvious : the iPhone API defines a lucrative platform which Apple wants to protect by eliminating any other platform from running on top. Some developers are pissed , while others don’t care. This is exactly the problem Microsoft faced when Java first appeared. It’s constantly bringing up a new debconf window that appears for a few seconds in my launcher. . The window just uses space poorly. I’ve loaded Precise into VMware (2GB, 2 cores). In 30 minutes I’ve run across so many UI idiosyncrasies in Software Center that I can’t remember them all. Here’s a short list: When I installed git, it didn’t change it’s status to installed until I moved to another screen and back. When I went back to see git, it had a “Buy…” button. It’s so slow. Technology DevelopMentor Courses - Wednesday, April 11, 2012 - Housekeeping Productivity
For example, something like the Shark steamers could be used to quickly clean floors, bathtubs, counters, windows and other flat surfaces. Cleaning services charge $120 to clean my 1300 sq.ft. apartment in 3 hours. However, they strike me as unproductive because they don’t provide their employees with the right equipment. There are many tasks which can’t be optimized, e.g. clearing clutter, making beds, folding and putting away clothes. But there are some tasks which can be sped up if they invest in the right equipment. All the cleaners I’ve hired so far have done these manually. Handwaving - Tuesday, February 15, 2011 - Adjusting Network Adaptor Priority
To force Windows 7 to prefer the LAN you must change the priority in the Network Connections window. Whenever I plug my laptop into the docking station, it continues to use the wireless adaptor rather than the LAN connection. But why isn’t this the default? Search for “View Network Connections”. Click “Organize->Layout->Menu bar”. In the menu bar, select “Advanced->Advanced Settings”. Move the LAN connection above the Wireless connection. Technology Handwaving - Saturday, January 8, 2011 - ASUS Ai Charger fails
The Apple iPad does not charge via a Windows PC’s USB. ASUS provides an application called Ai Charger which directs ASUS motherboards to push more energy through USB an properly charge an iPad. When I installed this iTunes could no longer synch nor recognize my iPad. Even after uninstalling the Charger I could not get iTunes to consistently recognize my iPad. On the rare occasion that it did, the backup process went for 12 hours before I finally killed it and gave up. month passed and I’d given up. Finally, iTunes 10 came out and my iPad synchs again. Handwaving - Wednesday, September 15, 2010 - Remote emacsclient via ssh
am sitting at a Windows machine with Cygwin/X. I have an emacs daemon on another machine running Ubuntu. ve launched “startxwin” to get a local X server and pulled up an xterm. connect to the remote machine with ssh –X and attempt to run “emacsclient –n –c”. The error I get is “X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.” No luck. found this page to fix the problem. For some reason $XAUTHORITY is blank, but it needs to be set to the same value that emacs has. To fetch that value, run: emacsclient –e “(getenv ”XAUTHORITY”)”. Follow the directions in that email. Handwaving - Thursday, July 15, 2010 - Soluto reduces boot time
Soluto is a new system monitoring application that helps users resolve problems with their Windows computer. Right now it has a beautiful UI that analyzes why your computer’s boot time is taking so long. used it to reduce my boot time from 2:45m to 1:41m. don’t reboot very often, but saving a minute is nice. Kennedy's Weblog - Monday, April 22, 2013 The Architecture of WCF Over the lifetime of Windows there have been many technologies to achieve this: sockets, DCOM, MSMQ,NET Remoting, ASMX Web Services and more. You can either create the ServiceHost instance yourself and call Open on it (known as self hosting) or you can get the Windows Process Activation Service to do this (formally known as WAS hosting). 'Before WCF it was, of course, possible for software running on different machines to communicate. The problem is all of these have different APIs and different levels of capability. Messages. | The Best from DevelopMentor | MORE | - Using Windows 7 Search to delete ‘obj’ folders
One easy way is to use Windows 7 Search to look for all the ‘obj’ folders and just delete them manually. For a complete overview of the Windows 7 Search syntax go to: [link]. Tags: Windows 7 Visual Studio will create ‘obj’ folders within your solution to store a bunch of temporary files. You can remove these files in a number of ways. To do this I use the ‘kind’ keyword in the query box. Tip: Just typing ‘kind:’ will give you a list of choices to choose from. I have been an avid user of Mesh and was so pleased with the beta that I was hesitant to switch to Windows Live Sync 2011 beta. You may want to check with you IT guy to see how he feels about the security risks, but for me this works really well (I do make sure that my Windows Live, Facebook and Google passwords are all different!). Tags: Windows Live But since the Mesh page started saying that the service is to be replaced I figured I ‘d better get my machines switched over. For those who don’t know: Live Sync allows you to synchronize folders between devices. The Blomsma Code - Sunday, September 12, 2010 - Just took a walk around Fenway – using Bing Maps
