The Shameful Legacy of 20th Century Software
But there are trends afoot: the closed ecosystem of the iPhone and the iPad, the coming Windows Phone 7 closed ecosystem, and the increasing ubiquity of Internet applications. Last week I got to spend an evening reinstalling my wife’s laptop because she picked up some malware. She received an email from a friend with a link to a YouTube video that prompted her to install a new codec. Except the codec wasn’t really a codec. The link wasn’t really to YouTube. The email wasn’t really from her friend. And it’s not fair.

Segmenting Architects
Or, the other way round: they are so busy being a Software Architect that they don’t keep up to date with emerging trends and neglect the Enterprise side Continuing my examination of the architect role I think we need to point out there is not one architect role my several. There is no such thing as an “Architect”, only an “Architect of something.” Rather than talk about an “Architect” with one word we really should use two words. The first word describes what they are an Architect of, and the second, well thats the word “Architect”. These roles will also vary by organisation size.

Pay Attention: The World is Changing
The world is changing and you need to pay attention to an important trend: digital natives are not very good at paying attention. Some researchers and educators are quite concerned about the trend toward short attention span and shallow multitasking, suggesting that we might be doing damage that will have wide-reaching social implications: …that’s what worries me. A digital native is a person for whom digital technologies already existed when they were born, and hence has grown up with digital technology such as computers, the Internet, mobile phones and MP3s. link]. 34;Why?"

Google Flu Trends
That’s cool and yet another creepy indicator of the scary amount of access Google has to trends in human behaviour. Previous year trends indicate an uptick in flu activity looming in the coming months of December through March. This makes total sense once you hear about it: Google has determined that certain search terms are good indicators of flu activity. So Google can use search term data to predict flu outbreaks. link]. The closest state to me is Maine where there is currently a moderate level of flu activity. Still interesting. Photo: ghindo ).

Reflections of an Agile Advocate
intend to look at the state of the “Agile”, identify some trends and suggest were we are heading next. I am speaking at the BCS SPA London group next month. It only seems like 5-minutes ago I was at the BCS building talking to the BCS PROMS-G group but this is a different group, a different audience and a different topic. Actually, its getting hard to find big new things to say about “Agile” so I’ve entitled my talk Reflections of An Agile Advocate. If you want to come along it is free but you will need to register

Reflections on XP Day
This is a trend I’ve observed elsewhere. Not necessarily Agile but a lot of the trends they see in society and the economy suggest the successful business of tomorrow look a lot like Agile organizations. I have spent the last two days at the XP Day 2008 conference here in London. very good conference and highly recommended. Unusually for me I wasn’t speaking at this one which made for a nice change. No worries about presentations, rooms and being in the right place at the right time. picked up a whole bunch of ideas, and had another bunch of thoughts. However, Agile has flaws.

Scrum is the new XP
expect the Scrum is Agile and Agile is Scrum trend to grow for the next year or two. Another insight I had last week: Scrum is the new Extreme Programming. Or rather Scrum is the new Agile Software Development. Before there was Agile Software Development there was Extreme Programming - or just XP. XP got all the attention and coverage. Then the term Agile was adopted by Kent Beck, Jim Highsmith, Martin Fowler and others as an umbrella term for XP, Scrum, FDD, Crystal, etc. Still all the terms XP, Agile, Scrum, Lean, etc. still confuse the uninitiated.) But now Scrum is supreme.
