The train metaphor of software development
Traditional software projects are like a train leaving the station. The train - our project - is like one of those trains you see in pictures of the Indian rail network with people crowded on and hanging out of the doors. Particularly true if you have American management and British engineers because the Yanks view the Brits as being overly negative.) In the extreme, those who put things on the train, and really know what is needed for the destination (BAs, Product Managers, etc.) But for the rest of the world, and with full embellishments. So action is taken.

Filling an iteration too well
recently worked with a team led by a manager who would not allow the team to take on more work than they could guarantee doing. He did this because he didn’t want to explain to the project manager running the project that the team hadn’t done as much as they had scheduled. The project managers in this company wanted predictability. The managers were making a trade off: less work for more consistency week-on-week. I want to stick with the theme of “how do I fill an iteration?” for a couple more entries. However, sometimes variations hold problems.

How do you make Lean Practical ?
Well in the interests of consistency I’ve decided to stick with one, since Agile Triangle tends to be used to refer to project management type stuff Agile Pyramid wins. I was Oslo recently teaching a course on Lean Software Development. When we were organizing this course on of our goals was: Make it practical. As I was preparing the course material this was at the front of my mind. But, there is a but. Besides, Google for Agile Pyramid and I’m on the first page.) Lean sits between the two. They tend towards an “all or nothing” approach which needs change from the top down.

On project management
I finished my last entry by taking a swipe at project management and even project managers. That was probably unfair but the fact is I am not a fan of project management It could be a career limiting move to speak against project management but I feel I should say something to explain my sideswipe, I should explain my thoughts. Of course I'm not naive enough heretical think projects “just happen" - there needs be some kind of project management but it is the form project management usually takes that I have a problem with.

News, Conferences and a Project Management revelation
As I said at the start of the year I want to divert more of my writing into other projects. Both of these will produce some reflections in this blog. I’m going to be writing more about Project Management in the near future. During the last two week I have taken Project Manager training, not just any training, PRINCE 2 certified training. More organizations look to PRINCE 2 to show you know about Project Management. Almost everyone of these people was an independent (contract) Project Manager in the IT sector. Should be fun.

Last week I did a talk to the British Computer Society (BCS) Project Management group - PROMS-G. ve now put the slides online - How and Why to Become Agile , as you might expect I tried to say something about the role of the project manager in Agile projects. Someone (who has remained anonymous) has written a blog entry on the talk The role of Project Managers in Agile Projects They were a good audience, enught questions and points to keep it interactive but not so many that I didn’t get to the end of my talk!

Book review: Agile Project Management with SCRUM (and rant)
It is difficult to say anything bad about Agile Project Management with Scrum (Schwaber, 2004). It sticks to its topic - managing projects using scrum. It is clear to me now (if there was ever any doubt) that Scrum is the management side that is missing from XP. That’s one reason why so many IT projects go wrong, people wait for someone else to fix it. It is a short book, lucid and easy to read. Rather than present Scrum in depth (which I think he has done elsewhere) Schwaber walks us through a set of small case studies and reflections on each one.

Why try new technologies?
b) There is not a lot of additional info: but assuming that the project was not a multi-million dollar project and there was some room for a little risk. c) I believe in risk driven project management. m not sure whether it is an official approach to project management. In essence, just about everything in PM is about risk management. I just read this post by Paul Gielens ( [link] ) about why a group of developers decided to use ASP.NET MVC. d just like to pitch in: a) It’s great to see people showing interest in new technologies. Yes/no?
