| The Latest from DevelopMentor | MORE | | Agile Clinic: Dear Allan, we have a little problem with Agile. And I’ve just posted a Guide to Planning Meetings on the Software Strategy website. Could it be that the Product Owners are not sufficiently flexible in what they are asking for and are therefore setting the team up to fail each sprint? while ago in my ACCU Overload piece “ Triangle of Constraints ” and again more recently (I’ve been busy of late) in Principles of Software Development (which is an work in progress but available for download.) 'Consider this blog an Agile Clinic. On Friday an e-mail dropped into my mailbox asking if I could help. And yo have Jira? Yikes! Allan Kelly's Blog - Sunday, April 28, 2013 Requirements and Specifications 'As I was saying in my last blog, I’m preparing for a talk at Skills Matter entitled: “Business Analyst, Product Manager, Product Owner, Spy!” So now I turned to a standard textbook on requirements: Discovering Requirements: How to Specify Products and Services by Alexander and Beus-Dukis. There are usually one or the other, or neither, and they are both about “what the software should do.” which I should just have entitled it “Requirements: Whose job are they anyway?” and so I’ve been giving a lot of thought to requirements. So I turned to my bookshelves…. nothing. Allan Kelly's Blog - Monday, April 15, 2013 Requirements whose job are they anyway? 'Later this week I’m giving a talk at Skills Matter entitled: “Business Analyst, Product Manager, Product Owner, Spy!” In the extreme this means developers never get to meet, talk to or understand the people and businesses that will be using the product. However, it was another problem that was on my mind more when I thought up the talk: the confusion of roles between Business Analysts and Product Managers, made worse by the appearance of the Scrum Product Owner title. think there are a number of problems on this side of the business. | The Best from DevelopMentor | MORE | - Software Facts - well, numbers at least
About a year ago I needed some numbers about software development - industry norms really: effectiveness, productivity, bug counts etc. Its actually pretty hard to get these numbers and after hunting around I found myself with a copy of Capers Jones Applied Software Measurement. Jones, for those who don’t know, has made a career out of analysing software and software teams numbers. Applied Software Measurement is his latest work on the subject - although its nearly three years out of date. Its a discussion of how to measure software and software teams. Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, January 14, 2011 - Product Management an open secret, a differenciator
At the Skills Matter Agile Lean Kanban exchange the other week someone - sorry I missed you name - told me about a report from the BBC on Product Management. It turns out the report is from a branch of the BBC I didn’t know about, “BBC Academy” and it entitled “The State of Product Management 2010.” Its well worth reading if you have an interest in Product Management or the UK software development scene. Although I’ve not blogged about it for a while Product Management is one of my passions. This is a role. Someone needs to do this. Documents are static. Allan Kelly's Blog - Wednesday, March 13, 2013 - Factory Physics and software factories
Every so often I come across managers who liken their software development teams to factories. They talk about the “software factory” or what happens “in the engine room.” I think this analogy shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what goes on in software development groups. The idea that you can liken the development of software to a factory line process, with repeatable inputs, defined outputs, known processes, and repeatable activities just isn’t the case. So I suppose in that way it is like managing software development. They are full of holes. Allan Kelly's Blog - Sunday, September 19, 2010 - When is software done?
Such a simple question… Earlier in my career I worked on a project that went into production with what I would consider a less than optimal set of internal admin tools. The building of software is a funny thing. Software is strange because there are different definitions of done and even when you think it’s done, it probably isn’t. Software components run for months or years with bugs, inconsistencies, performance problems, and security vulnerabilities. Software developers are accustomed to being asked “when will you be done?
