Change models: Shook, Schein, Dreyfus and Constructivism
Team which start by just “doing Scrum” or “XP” and want to advance, improve their process and practices further, deepen their understanding and application, take the next step, call it what you will, well, they need to advance by moving down the triangle. This also fits well with the Dreyfus model of skill acquisition which is so well liked by many in the Agile community. In this model a Master teach the pupils, when the pupils have mastered the skills they are allowed to think for themselves. His change model complements my own ideas well. Shook’s model is shown below.

Domain Distortion
Each communication channel in the process introduces new opportunities for information to be distorted. I’ve prettied it up here as a reminder to all of us to always be watchful for potential distortions as requirements flow from users and stakeholders to the people who build and test the software: The importance of good communication in the software development process cannot be overstated. If you are passionate about building software and want to thrive in your career, hone your communication skills. Remember the game Telephone? Ask questions. Write things down.

Survival Skills for Developers
To survive you need the right tools / supplies and the skills to use them. Sure, those are basic skills. If reading and writing from a database is a basic skill like walking, then a good data access framework is your walking stick. When it comes to text processing, there are lots of approaches that can work, but a regular expression can turn an arduous coding exercise into a single line of code. Decent command line and scripting skills are your ferrocerium – more hardcore than a match and much more durable. I bet you see where I’m going with this.).

Is process improvement bad for innovation?
Basically, as you get better at your process (i.e. Actually, according to this piece its not just ISO 9000 and 6 Sigma, it is broader, any process improvement initiatives. For someone like me, who is keen on both process improvement (specifically Lean processes) and innovation this poses a dilemma. Am I, by advocating process improvement and the adoption of Lean techniques actually hindering innovation? don’t advocate blanket adoption of a process. And finally, I don’t believe management can set out a process and mandate its adoption. Could be.

Debunking some myths about Agile
Last week a comment arrived on my Failures in Agile process entry from April 2007. It is widely felt that people, not process or method, are the key ingredient for successful software development. To find this project you need to a) be able to deliver, b) actually deliver business value. • ”all developers must be higly skilled (no learning moments are allowed)” First part: Highly skilled developers help any project go better. I think I get quite a few comments on this blog and I publish most of them. What’s interesting is that this post exists. to do this. False.

Why is building software difficult?
What is the problem with software engineering processes and tools that lead to such terrible results? The employees may not have the right skills to do the job effectively. Shuffling people into different roles and slapping on new processes and tools will do nothing to solve the core problem: most people and organizations are not capable of delivering results efficiently. Software projects are late and over-budget, yet still fail to meet all requirements and are buggy. Nothing. Most defense contracts are late and over-budget. The problem is entirely people.

London Software Partners - a new venture
Ever since I launched Software Strategy I’ve nominally offered training in software development, specifically Agile Software Development and even more specifically the management and process of Agile Software Development. Our skills complement one another: he is certified Scrum master, I’m a certified PRINCE2 project manager; he has spent the last few years with his head in the code, I’ve spent them managing teams and so on. However, I’ve never actually pushed this side of the business. Today we are launching London Software Partners to offer such training.
