Domain Distortion
Each communication channel in the process introduces new opportunities for information to be distorted.
The importance of good communication in the software development process cannot be overstated.
If you are passionate about building software and want to thrive in your career, hone your communication skills. Remember the game Telephone? You whisper something in your neighbour’s ear, he whispers to his neighbour, she whispers to her neighbour, and so on all the way down the line.

Survival Skills for Developers
To survive you need the right tools / supplies and the skills to use them.
(I Sure, those are basic skills. If reading and writing from a database is a basic skill like walking, then a good data access framework is your walking stick. Are there any System Analysts out there?
The BA is concerned with the people element of item 4 (and the implied process change) while the Architect is concerned with hardware, software, db, etc. Engineers and Architects tasked with designing solutions have the training, experience and skills necessary. Has anyone met a System Analysts lately? I ask because I’ve been looking for over a year and can’t find one. I should say immediately I’m not looking to hire one, rather I want to find out what they do.

Is process improvement bad for innovation?
Basically, as you get better at your process (i.e. Actually, according to this piece its not just ISO 9000 and 6 Sigma, it is broader, any process improvement initiatives. For someone like me, who is keen on both process improvement (specifically Lean processes) and innovation this poses a dilemma. Am I, by advocating process According to a piece on Knowledge @ Wharton the adoption of ISO 9000, Six Sigma, TQM and other similar initiatives can lead to a decline the innovation (subscription required). you go deeper into one thing) you don’t experiment as much around

Debunking some myths about Agile
Last week a comment arrived on my Failures in Agile process entry from April 2007. It is widely felt that people, not process or method, are the key ingredient for successful software development. To find this project you need to a) be able to deliver, b) actually deliver business value. • ”all developers must be higly skilled (no learning moments are allowed)” First part: Highly skilled developers help any project go better. I think I get quite a few comments on this blog and I publish most of them. Almost all of the ones I reject are spam/graffiti type, people

Why is building software difficult?
What is the problem with software engineering processes and tools that lead to such terrible results? The employees may not have the right skills to do the job effectively. Shuffling people into different roles and slapping on new processes and tools will do nothing to solve the core problem: most people and organizations are not capable of delivering results efficiently.
Software projects are late and over-budget, yet still fail to meet all requirements and are buggy. Nothing.

London Software Partners - a new venture
Ever since I launched Software Strategy I’ve nominally offered training in software development, specifically Agile Software Development and even more specifically the management and process of Agile Software Development. Our skills complement one another: he is certified Scrum master, I’m a certified PRINCE2 project manager; he has spent the last few years with his head in the code, I’ve spent them managing teams and so on. However, I’ve never actually pushed this side of the business. Today we are launching London Software Partners to offer such training.

Public sector ITC
Its about changing the processes people use, its about the people involved in the processes and it is about the technology too. The report also recommends: “Strong project management skills are vital” – it fills me full of thoughts of project managers with GANT charts – but then goes on to say “projects should be broken down into manageable chunks” which sound much more reasonable, then “a structure created for planning and monitoring progress” which seems entirely sensible. The Work Foundation (yes, odd name but it makes sense when you read their description of themselves ) has released a report on public sector IT projects. Sometimes it seems hardly a week goes by in the UK without the media publicizing another failed Government IT project.
