| | Tooling stack of testing Asp.MVC Views
“Craftsmen know their tools” At last weeks Jim Counts did a session on Testing MVC Views with ApprovalTests. watch the video here ] While I am always happy to see more ApprovalTesting in the world, I was also impressed with the full tooling stack Jim used throughout the presentation. Don’t get me wrong, Jim still does a simple “Hello World” type demo, but he applies all the rigor and professionalism I would want in a real project to that example. Nicely done Jim, you’ve inspired me to raise my game, and hopefully others as well. Asp.MVC Asp.Net C DevelopMentor Courses - Sunday, July 22, 2012

Inversion of Control and Mocking In this module we look at how we can design for testing using dependency injection and how Inversion of Control (IoC) containers can make dependency injection manageable. This module looks at this new set of tools in your synchronization toolbox. In this talk we look at the tools PFx gives you to aid parallelizing algorithms but we also shows that without care PFx isn't necessarily the free lunch it appears. | | Allan Kelly: Software demand curve
'Returning to my series of posts applying the tools of economics to software development - Supply & Demand in software development , Software supply over time and Software supply & demand - this time its Agile - it is time to turn our attention to the demand curve. And when one manager exaggerates benefit to get his project funded it creates an incentive for the next manager to exaggerate the benefit of the next project and so on. It is what psychologists and management students call Goal Displacement. First a reminder of how things start. Allan Kelly's Blog - Tuesday, December 3, 2013
Allan Kelly: Supply & Demand in software development
have long believed software engineers and their managers would benefit from a better understanding of economics. find it very useful to think of software development in supply and demand terms and use the tools of economists to understand what is happening. After all we have scarce resources in software development so lets use an Economists tools: supply and demand. 'I’m proud to say I am, or at least was, a Software Engineer. m proud to say that I’m a third generation Engineer. My farther and grandfather got their hands dirty with the oily sort of engineering. Pessimistic about Agile in retail banks
If you wanted to summarise my argument in one line I’d say: Too big to fail means too big to manage. However if an Agile ever becomes more than - incremental or evolutionary - there then conflicts will be created within the management regime which may lead to its own destruction. Indeed, given the chronically poor management skills in these banks authorising a rewrite would be a waste of money. In other words: the banks are suffering from disruptive innovation Sixth - something I just hinted at - the quality of IT management in banks is absolutely appalling. - A Roundup of MongoDB Management Tools
Back in the early days, there really were no management tools analogous to RDBMS tools (e.g. SQL Server Management Studio ). It’s time to look around and see what management / monitoring tooling is around these days for MongoDB. Robomongo — is a shell-centric cross-platform open source MongoDB management tool (i.e. User management. My take : Robomongo is definitely my current favorite management tool for MongoDB. Now there is one less worry in managing your web-scale data. User Managment. link].

- The NoSQL Movement, LINQ, and MongoDB - Oh My!
The NoSQL movement asks the question: “Is the relational database (RDBMS) always the right tool for data storage and data access?”. You may have to run a transformation tool if you’re making radical data changes, but that’s true in SQL systems as well. To get started, download MongoDB the tools and server here: [link]. There’s also a management console (and I mean "console"): It’s a little different. Generally I look down upon that sort of development, but for an admin tool it’s just fine. - Manage Your Christmas Card List
In my household, my wife manages the Christmas card mailing list. was thinking today it would be handy to use an online tool to replace that little tattered address book when it struck me: CROWD SPACE WOULD BE PERFECT FOR THAT! It’s perhaps a tad embarrassing that it never occurred to me before that Crowd Space would be ideal for Christmas mailing list management. Crowd Space also tracks birthdays and prints birthday reports so after Christmas you can use it to manage your birthday card mailings all year long! web-based tool for group / membership management.

- Setting up SQL Server 2008 Express with Profiler
and WCF Data Services , I use the Express Edition of SQL Server 2008 R2, but I have need for the SQL Profiler tool, which comes only with the full version and is needed to inspect what SQL is sent to the database. So I wrote a script that first installs just the tools from a trial version of the Developer Edition, which include both SQL Management Studio and SQL Profiler. This will install only the tools for SQL Server, including SQL Profiler. When I teach my DevelopMentor course on Entity Framework 4.0 Execute SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe, Technorati Tags: SQL
