The train metaphor of software development
Particularly true if you have American management and British engineers because the Yanks view the Brits as being overly negative.) In the extreme, those who put things on the train, and really know what is needed for the destination (BAs, Product Managers, etc.) I’m sitting on a train from York so it seems a good time to share my train-leaving-the-station metaphor with the world. In truth, if you’ve worked with me in the last few years, or heard me speak at a conference I may already have shared it with you. But for the rest of the world, and with full embellishments.

How do you make Lean Practical ?
Most of the people I expected to have on the course were software engineers and architects looking to improve their processes and practices, not CEOs looking to reinvent their companies. However, the objective here needs to be change the way people think about product development; or at least show that other approaches are possible. Yes I referenced them, yes I advised my students to read them but I used Morgan and Liker’s Toyota Product Development as a guide. I was Oslo recently teaching a course on Lean Software Development. But, there is a but. So what do I do?

What you need is a.
In walks the Programmer (Software engineer, software developer, etc. Designers, Build Engineers, and Consultants appear to specialise in parts of the system. You need a Product Owner, a Scrum Master and a Team. That is the guy who does the coding: Programmer, Software Engineer, Software Developers, call them what you will. Did I miss any? There are a lot of roles in software development teams and even more titles. Does your team have a full set? Do you need them all? How do you choose which ones you have, and which you don’t? But, is it the right thing?

Knowledge based product development
I've commented here before that I have recently become a Product Manager - when I say recently it was almost six months ago now. Of course I want to be a good product manager so I've been looking around material to tell me how to be a good product manager, much to my surprise I find that there are very few books written on the subject of product management. Indeed depending on your industry the role of Product Manager differs. In my search for product management books I came across " Product Development For The Lean Enterprise " by Michael N.

Product managers are software developers too!
It is an association of professional developers, for my money the members are among the best software engineers in the world. But, as I’ve said here before I am no longer a software engineer – I am a Product Manager. Perhaps I should give up my ACCU membership and my association with so many engineers. Now there is no rule that Product Managers can’t associate themselves with such groups but there is no such thing as a free lunch , if I am to embrace my new role and identity I need to give up some stuff. my interests have changed.

Fix Slow Firefox 3 on Vista with localhost
Everything was fine in IE7 and when connecting to the production web server from FF3. few seconds plus a search engine revealed a simple solution: In in the Firefox address bar, type about:config and hit Enter. I’ve noticed that Firefox 3 is insanely slow loading web pages on localhost when using the ASP.NET Development Server (based on Cassini). Today something snapped in my head and I felt compelled to figure out what was wrong. Click the " I’ll be careful, I promise! 34; button. In the Filter box, type network.dns.disableIPv6. Hooray!

How do you do innovation?
Just about everyone seems to have heard this example so I’ll be brief in my comments: at 3M engineers are encouraged to spend about 20% (figure varies depending on who you read and which company it is) on “personal projects.” Some of these projects eventually make it to full products, like Post-it pads and Google News. Regular readers of this Blog will know I don’t have much time for “big brains”: I don’t believe that the CEO, CTO and a few managers can sit in the boardroom for six hours and come out with a new product. There is a lot of hot air spoken about innovation.

Debunking some myths about Agile
This is one of the reasons I’ve devoted a lot of blog entried (and the odd conference presentation) to Product Management. And sometimes companies are prepared to take the productivity hit because the cost savings compensate for it. The original XP project, C3, did cause the near nervous breakdown of the first “Customer” - Business Analyst or Product Manager really which was a failure in C3. If it does - it is written in "reverse engineering" style.” And reverse engineering documentation is actually the only sort worth having. So how do you get good people?
