Last words on architects
As a quick rule of thumb consider: The Product Owner (Produce Manager/BA): is concerned with the What The Project Manager: is concerned with the When The (your type of) Architect: is concerned with the How And some closing advice: When you have a software system to design or fix, look to an architecture team not an individual. Give people architect responsibilities but make sure they are still defined as a Software Engineer or whatever term you use were you work. Time to bring this mini series to an end. I’ve talked about Segmenting Architects Architects

Second Mover Advantage
That is, being the first search engine or social networking service did not give those innovators any advantage in the market; in fact, most of those first generation companies are gone (Excite & SixDegrees). How many search engines came before Google? The problem with being a first mover is (1) you have to create everything yourself and (2) you have to convince This article (and this one) pokes a hole in the idea that there’s a sustainable first-mover advantage for businesses. This strikes me as obvious, yet VCs insist that being first to market is critically important.

'Wired for Innovation' and the Trouble with business value
In fact, if you have read anything by Brynjolfsson before there is a good chance it was his work on the “productivity paradox.” Firstly the book resolves the “productivity gap”. This was the observation in the late 1980’s that despite all the investment in productivity enhancing IT there was no resulting increase in productivity in the production and GDP statistics. I stopped reviewing books in this blog a while ago but, having said a few words about Domain Driven Design Using Naked Objects last time I want to say a few words about another book I’ve just finished reading: Wired for Innovation: How Information Technology Is Reshaping the Economy .

Fix Slow Firefox 3 on Vista with localhost
Everything was fine in IE7 and when connecting to the production web server from FF3. few seconds plus a search engine revealed a simple solution:
I’ve noticed that Firefox 3 is insanely slow loading web pages on localhost when using the ASP.NET Development Server (based on Cassini). Today something snapped in my head and I felt compelled to figure out what was wrong.

Knowledge based product development
I've commented here before that I have recently become a Product Manager - when I say recently it was almost six months ago now. Of course I want to be a good product manager so I've been looking around material to tell me how to be a good product manager, much to my surprise I find that there are very few books written on the subject of product management. Indeed depending on your industry the role of Product Manager differs. Today is my birthday, I always like where possible to take the day of work and do something enjoyable. This time I’m at home

Product managers are software developers too!
It is an association of professional developers, for my money the members are among the best software engineers in the world. But, as I’ve said here before I am no longer a software engineer – I am a Product Manager . Perhaps I should give up my ACCU membership and my association with so many engineers. On Wednesday night I was out drinking with ACCU members in London. For those of you who don’t know the ACCU I’d better explain.

How do you do innovation?
Just about everyone seems to have heard this example so I’ll be brief in my comments: at 3M engineers are encouraged to spend about 20% (figure varies depending on who you read and which company it is) on “personal projects.” Some of these projects eventually make it to full products, like Post-it pads and Google News. Regular readers of this Blog There is a lot of hot air spoken about innovation. Indeed, there is probably more talk about innovation than there is actual innovation itself.

Debunking some myths about Agile
This is one of the reasons I’ve devoted a lot of blog entried (and the odd conference presentation) to Product Management. And sometimes companies are prepared to take the productivity hit because the cost savings compensate for it. The original XP project, C3, did cause the near nervous breakdown of the first “Customer” - Business Analyst or Product Manager really which was a failure in C3. I think I get quite a few comments on this blog and I publish most of them. Almost all of the ones I reject are spam/graffiti type, people looking to put a link to their site on my

Compare and contrast: Terminal 5 and Wembley Stadium
One of the consequences is that BAA has adopted a number of techniques from the Lean production world. Terminal 5 shows that large engineering projects can be undertaken using these techniques and that they work. If you can get a copy of today’s FT do so, there is a full page on the Heathrow Terminal 5 project – you can read it online but you need a subscription. I’ve written about T5 before , and in truth there is little new in the FT piece that hasn’t been reported elsewhere.

Agile and Lean - the same but different
Toyota Production System was too Toyota specific. It comes from traditional software engineering, it comes from the unification of object orientation and it comes from the commercial world. At the end of last year I was lucky enough to hear Dan Jones give a keynote talk at XP Day 2008. Dan is one of the authors of The Machine that Changed the World and as such is one of the fathers of Lean.
