Product Management conference
Much to my surprise they believe there are about 90,000 to 110,000 Product Managers in the UK, which equates to one Product Manager for every nine developers. Finally, perhaps the most surprising thing at the conference was the reaction to one session about Agile Software Development. This just goes to show how things have yet to take off. Second: the Agile story is very compelling if you know a little about On Tuesday I attended a mini-conference about Product Management. In fact, this conference billed itself as “The UK’s first conference on Product Management” which

Christmas reading: Classic essays on software development
There are many, many books about software development. Arguments made by Conway explain much of what actually happens in software development. So, if you have one developer writing the entire system it will be all entangled, few interfaces and difficult for anyone else to work with. And if you have half a dozen developers who don’t communicate you will The technical ones alone (e.g. Java, C++, Apache, .NET,

Lean Question and Answer
A student at Fullerton University in California e-mailed a lot of people on the Lean Software Development mailing list with some questions for his masters thesis. I’ve removed a few questions because I don’t think the question or answer are particularly interesting. 1. How would you define lean development? The strictest definition of Lean Development would be to say it is a methodology proposed by the Poppendiecks ( Lean Software Development )based on lean manufacturing and product development. Since I had a little time on my hands I wrote him some lengthy answers.

The final sustainable edge
When I started reading the book I thought one of the pillars of this was going to be the development of your employees. Given how much trouble software developers have actually implementing “loose coupling” (and the corresponding “high cohesion”) one wonders how much trouble business will have with it. Two reasons: first, the workers are more highly qualified; second, because this is a green-field site, and costs are lower, many of the “best practices” I’ve finished reading “The Only Sustainable Edge” by Johns Hagel and Seely Brown . At the risk of boring my readers with a third

LinkedIn: good thing? Bad thing?
I'm also on OpenBC but I've not spent so much time developing my profile and connections there.) In part, despite my rational above I still imagine it could put me in contact with someone useful. Part of it is also slightly narcissistic - my network is bigger than your network. Some of it is also to do with tracking people, although I suppose I should use Plaxo for that. I’ve got an account on LinkedIn , and I’ve got a whole bunch of connections. If you don’t know LinkedIn it is a social network site with a work focus - believe the hype and you’ll find your next job
