Foundations of Business Analysis
Most companies rely heavily on the IT Business Analyst to make this happen. The Business Analyst serves as the liaison between non-IT employees who have a business problem to solve and the IT team who provides the technical solution. The Business Analyst must be tech-savvy, must be able to build consensus, and must be a great communicator as these two sides of the company often speak very different languages. In this era of bare-bones IT budgets and extreme cost-cutting pressure, the Business Analyst role is growing in importance.

Objective Agility - what does it take to be an Agile company?
Modern Analyst has published my latest piece about Agile at the company level: Objective Agility - what does it take to be an Agile company? This is actually a bit of a taster for a presentation of with the same title I’ll be doing at the IIBA Business Analysis conference in a few weeks. And talking of businesses analysis. am running an ‘Essential Agile for Business Analysts’ at Skills Matter in a few weeks. Many of these themes come up in that course. believe there is still space available.

Business Analysis Maturity Model
In these companies the “needs” role is usually (or should) be filled by a Business Analyst. blogged about these when I blogged about System Analysts earlier this year. Both Product Managers and Business Analysts (BA) are concerned with the “what” of the software product, but how they decide this is different. In some places BAs are really System Analysts, in others they are Project Managers, in others they just gather the requirements. Thats one of the reasons I really like the Business Analysis Maturity Model.

A tale of two conferences (Lean & BA)
Actually, although I was officially attending, and speaking at, the BA conference I actually attended several sessions at the Business Process Management (BPM) conference. Although I was a little unsure how I would be received by the Business Analysis community I need to report the reception was very positive. was talking about Agile and I found that most Business Analysts were both interested in Agile and welcoming Agile way of working. Over at the BA/BPM conference I was exposed to the Business Process Management world - speakers, exhibitors, attendees.

Events: Business Analysts & UK Lean conference
couple of days later I’m going to be across town at the IRM Business Analysis conference (28-30 September). As the summer comes to an end conferences start again. At the end of September I’m going to be at the UK Lean Conference (27-29 September) on a panel discussing Kanban. Monday the 28 is going to be a tough call. Should I go to the BA pre-conference session? Or the second day of the Lean conference? If your going to be at either conference please say Hello

Presentation to BCS and IIBA in Cambridge online
I spoke at a combined meeting of the British Computer Society (BCS) Cambridge branch, International Institute of Business Analysts and Cambridge Assessment on Wednesday night. It was an enjoyable night, Paul is a long term Business Analyst who used his presentation to describe the role of business analysis in an Agile development cycle, and I used my session to explain why Agile works better with some Business Analysts or Product Managers involved. Actually I was only one half of the act, Paul Turner was the other half.

Speaking in Cambridge: BCS, IIBA and Cambridge Examination
This is a join event between: the British Computer Society, Cambridge Examinations and the International Institute of Business Analysts. To be honest, I’m a little intimidated by these three heavy weight organizations, they are all quite serious… The subject is the role of Business Analysts in Agile development. ve entitled my bit “Agile Practices go better with Business Analysis.” Basically I’ll be making my ‘bottleneck has moved’ argument and describing how product owners (whether business analysts or product managers) can keep things moving along.
