But I’ve avoided direct comment on architect and architecture. should say before we go too far that when I talk about Architecture I’m thinking software architecture. And when I talk about Architects I’m thinking about the architecture of software. m not thinking of network architecture, or business architecture, of course these topics are connected with software architecture but we need to narrow the topic down a little. Nor am I talking about system architecture and system architects. Architecture is design. Allan Kelly's Blog - Wednesday, February 10, 2010 The Joys of Parenting For example, when it came to buying a house, I bought a couple of books and read up on the topic before plunging headlong. We took a course in natural childbirth and read several books on the topic. When it comes to topics such as software architecture, or personal finance and investing, I can read up on it and apply what I’ve learned fairly quickly. Whenever I am presented with a new challenge, I like to thoroughly research it. did the same thing when my wife decided to have a baby naturally. Not so with parenting. Then we met Carla Link. Tony and Zuzana's World - Sunday, October 4, 2009 Books for Product Managers Turns out books about Product Management are a little likes buses: None then 3 turn up at once! ve been looking for a good book on Product Management for a while so I was interested to see Tuned In by Craig Stull, Phil Myers and David Meerman Scott published. Turns out Luke has a book in the product management space too, its been out for a couple of years but somehow I’ve missed it. Again I’ve not had the chance to read it yet but I intend to, it is Beyond Software Architecture. Then, at Oredev I met Luke Holmann and had the pleasure to hear him speak. (Or, I am an Army of One)
Do you ever find your living out the examples in the books you read? The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning To my mind much of software design is like strategy. And by design I’m talking about the internal architecture stuff). Having an architectural design is a something you might want to do when you have time but your design will always evolve. What is important for both business strategy and software architecture is that the whole team know the direction, the objective and are fully on board. think I am. This is lonely and depressing. Allan Kelly's Blog - Thursday, January 26, 2006 - Naked Objects
finally managed to find time to read the book ( Naked Objects by Richard Pawson & Robert Matthews ) and I can recommend it. Naked Objects brings a different approach to software architecture. The book itself is different. it is printed so it looks almost like a children’s book with lots of pictures and glossy pages. In particular I like the use of case studies - I think we in the software professions don’t make enough of case studies. and that they know the problem domain at least as well as the software - probably better. Allan Kelly's Blog - Thursday, February 9, 2006 - More notes on the ACCU conference
Nico Josuttis is an ACCU conference regular, he is probably best know for his book The C++ Standard Library but (incredible) that was over 6 years ago now. These days he’s more of a software architect so it was fitting his main presentation was on Service Oriented Architecture - SOA. As with any good software architecture fashion it will increase flexibility, reduce development time, increase software reuse, reduce coupling, increase business value, reduce development costs and generally just fix the whole problem with software. Let me explain. Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, April 28, 2006 - Blog slow down
This will build on last years successful focus group on Conway's Law and will discuss how social forces effect software architecture. The second force that is at play is my book. Regular readers will have heard occasional mention of this from time to time, well, I’ve decided to go for it and attempt to write a book. Actually, this book has been in development to some degree for the last two or three years. Since returning from holiday I’ve been blogging less - some might argue this is a good thing. Several forces are conspiring here to slow me down. Allan Kelly's Blog - Monday, June 26, 2006 - Back from EuroPLoP
Our conversations revolve around patterns, software development, teams, books, writing and, in my case, business models. There are more and more patterns being written about business, it is only a matter of time before someone publishes the first book. He mentioned some research he had seen about software engineering literature. It seems that the most referenced software engineering book (not including text books) is… Design patterns (aka “Gang of Four book”). In fact 6 or 7 out of the top 10 books turn out to be pattern books. Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, July 13, 2007 %>
