| The Latest from DevelopMentor | MORE | | An Agile Reader - buy it now! When I deliver training courses I like to give participants something to take away to read, something that is more readable than PowerPoint slides. Sometimes participants get a copy of my book, Changing Software Development , but that is expensive to me and not always appropriate. This is a mini-book, its a collection of articles which are interesting for someone new to Agile and decidedly shorter to read than Changing Software Development. The feedback on the mini-book has been good and at recent conferences I’ve given away some spare copies. Price is £4.99 Allan Kelly's Blog - Sunday, October 24, 2010 A3 reports: templates and observations If you want to know more about A3 reports John Shook’s book “Managing to Learn” is good, although you have to order it from the Lean Enterprise Institute , its not at your local online bookshop. They look odd to manager schooled in long report and PowerPoint reports, they require a depth of thinking they are not accustomed to and they look funny. As I mentioned last time, I recently delivered a course on Lean software development in Oslo. One of the exercises I set people was to produce an A3 report. One day there will be a better solution, er, I mean better counter measure. Allan Kelly's Blog - Monday, May 17, 2010 Øredev The nice people organizing Øredev in November have made me a postcard: Allan Kelly at Øredev Flights are booked and presentation prepared (just a little bit of PowerPoint, must try harder). m speaking on the Thursday, The Hitch Hikers Guide to Management. Do you ever find your living out the examples in the books you read? And instead of white boarding with many I’m going to PowerPoint the whole thing. In a couple of weeks I’m supposed to present (PowerPoint) something to some folks who’ll decide if we get to move the project forward. think I am. Arie De Gues says: “The fact is that the word strategy has tends to be misused. It should not be a noun; you should not ‘have’ a strategy, in the sense of a document which the organization follows. When they had something to do, like fight a war, they just got on and did it. Allan Kelly's Blog - Thursday, January 26, 2006 - Write a book or start a company? - Lessons for Product Managers and notes on VoIP, eBay and Skype
First idea is to write a book. couple of years ago I started to outline a book that would piece together some of my Overload pieces with some of my MBA dissertation work to produce a book called something like “Re-learning software development” or “Knowledge, Learning and Change in Software Development” or even “Software Development in the 21st Century” I started to put some flesh on the idea and even had a conversation with a publisher. She asked me the very product manager-like question “Why would someone buy this book?” Maybe I’ll have to go back to the book Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, March 17, 2006 - Spoke at ACCU London last night
And, in case I didn’t mention it, I have a book to plug ! :) The subject of my talk was ‘ Agile development - where to begin ’. As it happened 7 City were fully booked last night so couldn’t find a room for us. Now I’ve given presentations before without a projector or PowerPoint, and in truth I don’t particularly like PowerPoint. gave a talk at the BBC before Christmas without PowerPoint and projector but that was different. If you want to know what I said you have two options: buy the book , or invite me to give a talk to your organization/company/family Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, February 22, 2008 - Tuft, Conway and PowerPoint
Tufte’s point is actually about the inadequacies of PowerPoint. really dislike PowerPoint and wish I could give it - and similar tools - up. have two up coming presentations - BCS Project Management and Oredev - and I’ve prepared PowerPoint decks for both. Because they are a crutch to lean on, parts of me is scared without it • Because the event organizers expect it • Because I want the attendees to have something to take home • Because it helps to plug my book (nice big picture!) So when I see his name on something I pay attention. agree with him. Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, August 29, 2008 - Øredev
