I fail at TDD?
If I’m using tools like NUnit, NCover, and NDepend, I should be able to catch my “mistakes pretty quickly. I actually think I’m pretty good at TDD. Every now and then I get reminded that I’m not as good as I think I am. I’ve been working on a new project (an implementation of the Mustache template language in C# that I’m calling Nustache ) and have been having a lot of fun with it. This is the project I’m going to use as an example of how I fail at TDD. decided the tokens would be instances of a class called Part. It has a method named Scan. | | Allan Kelly: Software demand curve
'Returning to my series of posts applying the tools of economics to software development - Supply & Demand in software development , Software supply over time and Software supply & demand - this time its Agile - it is time to turn our attention to the demand curve. But this might the result of optimistic thinking itself: “38% of businesses openly admit benefits are overstates in business cases in order to obtain project funding” - from a Cranfield Business School study I reported in October 2010. First a reminder of how things start. People are encouraged to ask for more and more. Allan Kelly's Blog - Tuesday, December 3, 2013
Pessimistic about Agile in retail banks
No action since 2009 or 2010 on those links. To make matters worse banks are where the money is so they have been preyed on by major systems companies and tool vendors. Put it this way: banks are major buyers of automated testing tools which aren’t used. 'Almost exactly two years ago I wrote a strident blog entitled “ Agile will never work in Investment banks ”. Most of these conversations have been with people who have more, and more recent, experience in banks than I do. In particular I found Peter Pilgrim’s blog closely aligned with my own views. You see my argument? Allan Kelly's Blog - Thursday, October 3, 2013

- Building Windows Machines in Amazon EC2
I'm putting Visual Studio 2010 Beta on mine to play around with that software without 'polluting' my real system. All information, source code, and especially tools are provided as is and on a "use at your own risk" basis. Tags: Articles Tools In this article I'm going to give you a simple, step-by-step overview of how to create a Windows 2008 server image in Amazon's Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) infrastructure. Now I must admit I'd rather have found a good tutorial on The Internets or even in a book. Feel free to send me any I missed. Here we go. Create an Account. Launch!

- The NoSQL Movement, LINQ, and MongoDB - Oh My!
The NoSQL movement asks the question: “Is the relational database (RDBMS) always the right tool for data storage and data access?”. You may have to run a transformation tool if you’re making radical data changes, but that’s true in SQL systems as well. To get started, download MongoDB the tools and server here: [link]. Generally I look down upon that sort of development, but for an admin tool it’s just fine. All information, source code, and especially tools are provided as is and on a "use at your own risk" basis. Insanity!” Flat files? Related classes?

- Visual Studio 2010 Power Tools
The Visual Studio 2010 Power Tools have just been released. Of course I don’t use Resharper or CodeRush (I use too many machines I don’t control to become dependent on them) so some of these features may be available in those tools. But for me the power tools are a welcome addition to the IDE. There’s all sorts of goodness in here: new flexible tab handling in the VS shell (vertical tab groups, tabs grouped by project, dropping of rarely used tabs, etc); a new searchable Add Reference dialog; new editor enhancements to make navigation easier and much more.

Tags: NET C# Community Visual Studio 2010 For many years the mantra for implementing business logic in your line of business application has been: “don’t put it in the database, don’t put it in the user interface”. In other words, apply the layers design pattern if at all possible, together with implementing the Model-View-ViewModel ( MVVM ) or Model-View-Controller ( MVC ) pattern. Life is good. 2: GO. 6: GO.

- Automatically Upgrading to Visual Studio 2010
I’ve had the need recently to convert a large number of projects from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. was not able to find a tool out there that does this automatically, so I wrote one. Of course, upgrading to VS 2010 is only half the process. Just upgrading to VS 2010 will leave the application targeted to whatever version of.NET is was using (for VS 2008 it’s usually.NET 3.5). The key is to invoke devenv.exe from the command line and use the /upgrade switch. Here is a link to the docs on that option. Cheers.
