MongoDB vs. SQL Server 2008 Performance Showdown
The audio and video isn’t too hot, but the content is. These inserts were performed by inserting 50,000 independent objects using NoRM for MongoDB and LINQ to SQL for SQL Server 2008. GHz processor using the 64-bit versions of both SQL Server 2008 Standard and MongoDB 1.4.1. This article is a follow up one I wrote last week entitled “The NoSQL Movement, LINQ, and MongoDB - Oh My!”. In that article I introduced the NoSQL movement, MongoDB, and showed you how to program against it in.NET using LINQ and NoRM. Those were. Ease-of-use and deployment. Performance. money) to burn.

Boot to VHD Screencast
Windows 7 or Windows 2008 Server R2 are required. Have you heard of the new feature in Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 called Boot to VHD? If you want to see boot to VHD in action, then check out the video here: Download Screencast: BootToVhdKennedyWalkthrough.zip (339 MB). WARNING : This is some advanced stuff. It's not that hard, but you can break things that are hard to fix. So, there is no warranty express or implied. It is amazing! But it's one of those concepts that people hear about and think "hmm, interesting." All content copyright Michael C. Kennedy.

Video Show on What’s New in Visual Studio 10
There’s a new show on Channel 9 called 10-4 that looks at what’s new in.NET Framework 4 and Visual Studio 10. The first episode is a pretty introductory walkthrough showing you how to download and run the Virtual PC image with the CTP build. Host Brian Keller even takes you through the process of hacking the virtual machine’s clock so the CTP won’t expire on January 1, 2009. Based on comments so far, I’d say I’m not the only one who found the 10-4 music a bit loud / distracting and a bit sucky. Hopefully they’ll fade it out next time.).

Election 2008 Video of the Day
I recently created the NFL Video of the Day gadget for Windows Vista and wrote an article on how it was made. After John's blog about creating a Mac Widget for the elections I figured I'd adapt my NFL gadget and change it into an Election 2008 Video of the Day gadget. Mine is not as fancy as I think his will be, but then again, it's just for fun, right? read more

Outlined Text in WPF
It always blows people away when you show them a piece of text filled with a live video complements of a Visual Brush. With it you can create text like this: Notice how the text is outlined in a different color -- any brush could be used so you could do wacky things like have the "WPF" part be ringed in fire (using the Dreamscene fire video for example). One thing that's kind of cool in WPF is that you can use brushes to fill almost anything and that there are some really cool brushes in the toolkit. Here's the sample project which full source code: OutlineTextTest.zip (1.54
