Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, March 30, 2012 How many people are doing Agile? Sure if your following everything Kent Beck says in the XP books your probably Agile. In late 2006 Gartner issued a report (“ Agile Development: Fact or Fiction ”) which estimated less than 5% of development groups were doing Agile. The BIG question came up the other week during my presentation to HP: “How many organizations are doing Agile?” As I said at the time: Thats the $64,000 question - or perhaps in todays money, $64,000,000,000. Of course, it depends a lot on how you even define “Agile”. Within organizations Agile exists in some places and not in others. Monster.co.uk Allan Kelly's Blog - Tuesday, May 12, 2009 Recruitment and customer experience In posts in January 2006 and December 2006 I sounded off against poor travel company web sites. Plus I’ve read a fair few HR text books and articles and I know HR people aren’t really as bad as IT people make out. Wednesday’s Financial Times carried the monthly technology review. couple of pieces caught my eye, both individually and when put together. This is a point I’ve made myself in the past – although I’ve never came up with such a compact phase to describe it. My customer experience is poor because the web sites are poor. | The Best from DevelopMentor | MORE | - Two of the technical presentations at ACCU - and the A, B, and C of speakers
These guys are making the transition from ‘C’ to ‘B’ list in my book. The ACCU is a technical organization - people join because it has a technical focus. But actually the secret of the ACCU is that it is really about developing people. We help those technical people develop their technical skills - but on the quiet we help them develop their less technical skills, we challenge them to think about less technical issues. One of the ways we help people develop themselves is by giving them opportunities. And then we have the ‘C’ list. These are the most important speakers. Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, March 30, 2012 - The Mystery of Concurrent GC
However, Jeff Richter seems to say in his book " CLR via C# " that concurrent collections occur only on multiprocessor machines. Several other authors back this up (notably Stephen Pratschner in " Customizing the.NET Framework Common Language Runtime " and Joe Duffy in his " Professional.NET Framework 2.0 " book; both are excellent btw). There's been a discussion going on within DevelopMentor for a couple weeks regarding concurrent GC and when it really applies. This provides for more responsive UI applications at the expense of slower collections and a higher memory utilization. - Blog at 2 months, the National Theatre and food
It hasn’t helped that during these last two months I’ve had to do final preparation for EuroPLoP (preparing my paper, shepherding), being shepherded for VikingPLoP, finalising my chapter in the PLoPD5 book (due at the end of 2005 or start of 2006 I’m told), co-ordinating work on the ACCU website and holding down a full time job! For some reason the Proms programme has been difficult to get hold of this year so the season has started and I’ve hardly got any booked. I’ve been writing this blog now for nearly 2 months. It doesn’t feel like it but I have. It still feels new. Allan Kelly's Blog - Sunday, July 24, 2005 - Patterns and story telling
The book that I’ve been reading most is “Story Telling in Organizations: Why Storytelling is transforming 21st century organizations and management” by Larry Prusak, John Seely Brown , Stephen Denning and Katalina Groh. intend to write more about his in future - probably in the prelude to some pattern paper, most likely for EuroPLoP 2006 but I’ll preview my reasoning here. Several of the writers in this book make the point that the most effective stories are the ones which connect with the listener. Katalina Groh is a film market who is new to me. and stories. Allan Kelly's Blog - Friday, August 12, 2005 - 2006 arrives with Snow and Advertising in the US
can’t prove this comment in any great detail although I have seem some evidence recently in Buzzmarketing - a book I’ve only had a chance to browse not read - but I’ve observed this many times. I welcomed in the New Year with some skiing on Colorado - mainly in Beaver Creek but a little in Vail. Snow was great - I’ve never had so much powder in my life, in fact the main problem was probably too much snow. Beaver Creek is only about a third the size of Vail, which is itself a lot smaller than the big French areas like Courchevel. Ever looked at the names of businesses in the US? Allan Kelly's Blog - Sunday, January 8, 2006 - Websites are getting worse
When it comes to holidays I am a late booker - the idea of booking two months in advance - let alone six - is foreign to me. And how many customers would be prepared to compromise and book if only the site would give them the option? No wonder package holiday companies are slowly dying, people want to book online but the website getting away. book it at the same time as your holiday. Time was when the software was just in your PC. We see software everywhere - well not quite everywhere I believe there are many more opportunities to make it omnipresent. could go on.
